In 1989 Audi created the Audi Duo, a hybrid gas/electric car, based on the 100 Avant(prototype only)

Some time in the 90's, they created another Audi Duo, which was based off of the 100/A6 Avant(prototype only)

In 1997 Audi created the Audi Duo III, which was based off of the Audi A4 Avant and was put into production. The 1.9L TDI engine was coupled with a 29hp electric motor. This was the first hybrid ever put into production by a European car manufacture, however, only about 60 were ever made because of the steep price the hybrid carried, and thus it was discontinued. Until now(with the new Q7 hybrid) no European car manufacture has put hybrid powered vehicle into production.
